VISTA ULTIMATE - UPGRADE FAILED
Run the Upgrade Advisor to check for possible software/hardware compatibility issues? Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor: a BSOD with the message machine_check_exception . Still unable to upgrade to Vista Ultimate......
First off, I ran the Vista Upgrade Advisor several times over the course of a week to make sure I knew what I needed. The hardware checked out I took out the failing Vista upgrade DVD and put the Ghost recovery disk and 20 minutes later, I was back running Windows XP with all my programs and files in tact.

Stop the hatin' and feel the love for Windows Vista! Seems like running the Upgrade Advisor would tell you what you need to know before upgrading. it was a problem with the BIOS, and the motherboard manufacturer should provide a BIOS upgrade. The Advisor indicates that Vista will run on the system - although the maximum memory is limited to 512MB. The install / upgrade seemed to progress nomally - although it took several hours - but After 8 hours of "waiting for something to happen", I concluded that the install failed and restored XP(fortunately).

The helpful program that purports to advise users if their computers are ready for Vista totally failed on my machine. Interestingly it asked to go on the internet not once but 3 times and carried huge advertisements for Vista. It took about 10 minutes to run before it came up with this error.
